Scoil Mhuire is very proud to be an Active School and we have received an Active School Flag in recognition of this. We have a very busy Active Schools Committee, who are constantly thinking of ways to keep us active and provide opportunities to get us moving!! The Active Committee rotate equipment and games in all yards on Fridays as part of “Ball Free Friday’ initiative which was introduced after successful petitioning by pupils.

Active School together with Health Promoting School mind-sets have also formed the foundation for our Healthy Lunch Policy. Children are encouraged to reward their bodies with healthy food, physical activity and mindfulness over sugary foods and screen based rewards.

PE

The full physical education curriculum is taught at Scoil Mhuire. The six strands of the curriculum include Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Outdoor & Adventure Activities and Aquatics.

All children take part in at least 1 hour of PE every week but discretionary time is also allocated to physical activity.

The Parent’s Association generously provide funding to ensure all pupils from 3rd-6th Classes can participate in Swimming Lessons every year. Pupils enjoy both the social and physical sides of this experience and look forward to it every year.

Dance is taught across a 6 week block during the Summer term by the talented Sean Nós Dancing teacher Pat O’Dea. We are incredibly lucky to have Pat returning to us every year as he is in great demand around the country.

Active Week

Active Week is one of the highlights of the year at Scoil Mhuire. Our Active Schools Committees look forward to organising Active Week in June. There are firm favourites every year but we like to try out new activities including Yoga, Boxing, Zumba, Rugby and much more.

Our Active Week always ends with a Sean Nós Dancing Concert. Parents are welcome to come to our school and enjoy watching their children taking part in Sean Nós Dance, which is an integral part of our cultural heritage. Children practice hard for the 6 weeks and are proud to show off their skills. Learning Sean Nós Dance has wide reaching benefits for all pupils, including physical, cognitive and social benefits.

Sports Day

Every child in the school takes part in teams which includes a mix of children from Juniors to 6th. There is great excitement every year as the children take part in Co-operative games and the traditional favourites such as the sack race, ‘potato and spoon’ race, 3-legged race and running races. Children on the Active Committee collaborate with Staff to come up with new, exciting and challenging activities to include in Sports Day.
